The Product Owner owns the roadmap for their particular business capability area, ensuring that it is in line with the company’s overall objectives and is clearly communicated to the development team. They work closely with business counterparts to provide solutions to business objectives and desired outcomes. They also work closely with the development team to ensure solutions are feasible, scalable and will deliver tangible business benefits. A key emphasis of this role is collaboration; not just with business stakeholders but with the development team for which this role is a part of.

Roadmap items are prioritized by product owners and their business counterparts. Cross-cutting initiatives, that require a change within the product area, will be prioritized by the business or IT leadership.

Within the team the role will act as the voice of our business counterparts, ensuring the Product Team is focused on delivering change with high business value. Covering research, specification, planning and delivery, this role spans the complete change lifecycle. The role is accountable for decisions regarding priority of work done by the Agile development team.

Key Responsibilities

Liaison & Communication

● Ably represents, interfaces with and engages the business user

● Understand all business processes that fall within their product area

● Acts as a fully integrated member of the team

● Uses clear goals to communicate the project vision at the beginning of every release and sprint so

that the team understands and is equipped to realise it

● Works with stakeholders to make business decisions and clearly communicates requirements

through epics and stories so they are understood

● Collaborates with the development technical lead and team on effort estimations of features to

assist with priority decisions

● Works with Development team lead to understand impact of project to the product and back log of

epics that are required

● Works with other product teams and Product Owners as and when required

● Works with technical leadership on cross cutting initiatives

● Communicates status (including progress) outside the team via product release reporting and “show

and tells” to stakeholders

● Provides rapid feedback on any blockers/issues/Changes required to development team lead,

technical leadership team and business counterparts

Development

● Creates, maintains, prioritizes, and sequences the product backlog based on business value

milestones for each project ‘in flight’

● Creates epics, user stories from themes and features small enough to be delivered within a single

sprint.

● Decides which epics and user stories are scheduled into sprints based on benefits derived from

evidence/observations with the business counterpart.

● A focus on MVP and agile delivery for fast feedback and validation of roadmap.

● Participates in project planning, daily stand-up meetings (scrums), reviews, retrospectives, sprint

and release planning, demos and other Scrum-related meetings

Application Support

● Reviews deliverable and demonstrable code after every sprint, and has the authority to accept or

reject

● Develops and maintains standards for testing and progress visibility

● Provides progress reporting

● Assists with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and radiating information

● Assists with prioritization and resolution of defects / bugs

Management

● Is always accessible and participates proactively and constantly in the team activities

● Steers the team to ensure delivery of business value

● Is visible, vocal, and objective

● Provides encouragement, recognition, and support to the team

● Terminates the sprint if a drastic change-in-direction is required

● Pivots the project at the end of the sprint if necessary

Personal Qualities & Skills

● Experience taking accountability for a product with a visionary but economic approach to decision

making, balancing business/customer needs and technical feasibility

● Proven track record of gathering business requirements and translating them into user stories

● Strong research and analysis skills

● Proficient in documenting and designing business processes and data flows

● Strong communication skills; able to talk with both business stakeholders and technical teams,

facilitating discussion and negotiation

● Good understanding of the delivery lifecycle and governance process with the ability to identify and

manage issues

● Practical use of JIRA, or similar

Beneficial but not essential

● Previous experience within the travel sector would be a benefit, but not essential. Must have

experience working on systems which manage complex data, ideally for a retail product

● Practical experience working within an Agile Scrum team to deliver change to digital products
