Based in one of our busy kitchen at The Edinburgh International Conference Centre you would learn the different sections within the kitchen, gain experience with food preparation, cooking techniques and work safely within HSE guidance.

 

Tasks could include, but not limited to:

  • the preparation of food,
  • baking
  • service
  • stocktaking
  • moving stock
  • cleaning

There is no supervision of other staff.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

An apprenticeship is a funded programme where an individual learns new skills, knowledge and behaviours in a chosen sector. An apprenticeship will enable you to work and earn a wage whilst developing and gaining new skills as an employee.

 

Alongside your day-to-day duties, you will complete the Professional Cookery Level 5 Apprenticeship. This is a nationally recognised qualification, and the primary objective of the Commis Chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. You will be completing your qualification through the Apprentice Hospitality Scotland by attending residential workshops which will be outside your normal place of work, on-line modules and ‘in-unit’.  You will be supported through this qualification by your Personal Development Coach who will regularly visit you at your place work. All travel expenses will be covered by your employer. You are not expected to complete any of your Apprenticeship work outside of your normal working hours and will be given set time each week to complete your work.

APPRENTICE COMMIS CHEF

SALARY: £21880.00 per annum

LOCATION: Leith’s at the EICC, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, 150 Morrison Street, Edinburgh. EH3 8EE

REPORTING TO: Head Chef

HOURS/WORKING PATTERN: 40 hours per week working 5 days out of 7, usual hours 08:00 – 16:00 however there may be times when you will need to work outside these hours.

DURATION: Minimum 24 months

Do you have a real passion for cooking and would love a career as a Chef? Would you like to earn whilst you learn? Well now is the time, as we have a very exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Commis Chef to join our team at Leith’s at the EICC.

Leith's at the EICC is a fantastic training ground to learn the basic skills and gain experience in an extensive, well equipped kitchen, with skilled staff to help develop the apprentice. The events business allows for a good work life balance and although some weeks can be busy with additional hours required, this time will be paid, or the time will be taken back in lieu. EICC is in a central location in Edinburgh so there are easy transport links for getting to work. Being part of the larger Compass Group means there are many opportunities to work in a number of other locations within the group to further develop skills and gain experience.

You do not need to have any experience as full training will be provided as part of the Apprenticeship. This is ideal for a school leaver or someone wanting a career change. Apprenticeships are for everyone regardless of age!

Over a 12–15-month period you will be trained to become a fully Qualified Commis Chef.
